Vanilla Bean Whole Bourbon Organic, 4 beans
These beans are the fruit of vanilla planifolia, an orchid originally native to Mexico, and the most aromatic and flavorsome of the vanilla species.
In 1841, Ile Bourbon, (now called Reunion Island) became the first location where vanilla was grown commercially. It was here that a 12 year old slave discovered that the flowers could be artificially pollinated by hand. Cultivation soon spread to the Comoros Islands & Madagascar.
Today, "Bourbon" is used to describe all vanilla planifolia beans that are grown on any Indian Ocean island.
These vanilla orchids are still hand pollinated in the original way, a labor intensive process. This is a beautiful, artisan product.
