Grains of Paradise Whole
OK home brewers, this ones for you. Grains of paradise are also called Melegueta Pepper, Guinea Pepper, or Alligator Pepper. They are actually a member of the ginger family, and originally native to West Africa. They first arrived in Europe during the Middle Ages, and were consumed as a condiment, like piper nigrum pepper, until the mid-1800s.
Today they are one component of the Moroccan spice mixture ras el hanout. And of course, a brewing ingredient! Also known to infuse neutral spirits now and then!
